This is an original Navajo Native American Indian Third Phase Concho Belt dating to circa 1930’s. In the early 1900s, the third phase of the concha belt began when artists learned how to set turquoise into their pieces. The piece shows a large rectangular buckle that is hallmarked “GI” and “Sterling” and is set with four polished gem quality turquoise stones from the Morenci Turquoise Mine, which opened in 1864. The belt also shows six nice size butterfly conchos and five oval conchos with each of the eleven conchas being set with a single polished Morenci Turquoise stone. The belt is strung on a black tan leather. Each concho shows a period correct soldered copper loop on the back with black leather gasket, another period correct attribute. Each concho has an outstanding hand tooled and etched intricate design with a fine scalloped edge. Overall the piece shows an outstanding large size. The back of the buckle is marked from a previous Trading Post “3250” the price at the time. The buckle measures 3 5/8” by 3 3/8”, the butterfly conchas are each 2 5/8” by 1.75”, and each oval conchas are 3.25” by 2.5”. The belt overall measures 50 inches overall in length.
