Featured in this lot are classic Navajo Diné T&R Singer Sterling Silver Dangle Earrings, signed. The earrings feature a wonderfully and professionally crafted sterling silver construction that shows a semi oblong design with arched geometric decoration. Navajo jewelry, specifically silver and turquoise, began in the mid-19th century (circa 1865) when silversmithing was learned from Mexican artisans, with Atsidi Sani (“Old Smith”) credited as the first Navajo smith. Initially using melted coins and basic tools to create conchos and, later, turquoise settings, the craft evolved from personal adornment into a significant commercial art form, strongly influenced by trading posts and tourism in the early 20th century. Tommy Singer (1940-2014) is thought to be one of the most important and greatest contemporary silversmith artists and his work is highly sought after. His early works were done in the Silver overlay technique but soon began to feature Turquoise stones. While working with scrap turquoise chips, Tommy pioneered the technique of Chip inlay used by thousands of artists to this day. After his death, his wife, Rose, continued to create jewelry using designs Tommy created prior to his passing. The earrings are labeled on the reverse bottom, "T&R Singer", and "Sterling". Earrings are in very nice condition with rich patina noted. Each measures 1.25"W x 2"L, combined weight is 12.4 grams.
