For your consideration is this large, early 1900's, Navajo Native American, Two Gray Hills, hand woven rug. Characteristics of Two Grey Hills rugs include colors of natural browns. tan. gray, ivory and white. Patterns usually feature central stepped diamond motif and other patterns. This rug, is one of the largest Navajo rugs we have seen here at North American Auction Company. This beautiful early weaving features stepped crosses inside stepped diamonds; in the center is a serrated diamond. The rug is bordered in a geometric design. Colors in the rug are earthy and natural: brown, cream, tan, gray and a wonderful muted red. This rug is very soft and has a blanket like feel to it; it was most likely originally woven to be a wearing blanket. The original quality and craftsmanship are evident in this still beautiful piece, though so are the years. There are a number of places in the rug where the warp is showing through or is exposed and loose on the sides. There are also some holes in the rug. The Two Grey Hills pattern was started in circa 1900-1914 by George Bloomfield and Ed Davis at the Toadlena and Two Grey Hills Trading Post with this being an wonderfully early example. This large Navajo woven rug still has a wonderful look and would very beautifully compliment the modern Western aesthetic. The rug measures 108" x 60".
