Featured in this lot is this Navajo Yei Be Chei polychrome mohair rug circa 1950's. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted mohair construction that features four Yei entities woven into the face of the rug and set to a unique brown field and shows the Yei figures holding spears and fletched adornments. The Yei Be Chei dancers are the human impersonators who perform the ceremonies. The Yei Be Chei weavings present the dancers as they dance, perform, and enact the ceremony of the Yeis. Ceremonies are performed to either attract or exorcise effects to The People. Yei is the Navajo name for a deity or a holy one. The Yeis are woven facing outward. They are usually depicted with long bodies and skirts and hold sacred plants or symbols. The condition of this rug is good with some wear to the corner tassels but otherwise the rug shows good overall condition. The measurements of this rug 56 1/2" x 26 1/4".
