For your consideration is this original Wool Navajo Yei rug. A tag coming with the rug identifies the rug as originating in Chinle, AZ and the Weaver identified as Martha Benally. Though this rug was actually woven in Cinle, the Navajo Yei rugs begin in the Northwest corner of the reservation and the Shiprock Trading Company. Yei are religious deities taken from the Navajo Sand paintings. In these weavings, Male Yei have round heads, while female Yei have square heads. This rug, believed to date to the 1950's-1960's, features 3 female Yei on a golden-yellow field. The Yei figures are white with gray skirts having red, white and black zig-zag design. Each of the figures holds a red staff of brown, white and gray-blue chevrons in each hand. The rug is bordered in black, bright red, and white. This rug is in excellent condition. It measures 23" x 36".
