The lot features a tanned hide and beaded man’s war shirt or dance shirt attributed to the Northern Cheyenne’s and dates to the early-to-mid-1900’s. The large shirt is comprised of buckskin like tanned hide with integral long hand cut fringes along the bottom edge of the front and back of the shirt as well as at both arm cuffs. The large, heavy shirt would approximately equal a man’s size 44 to 46 and shows good condition. The piece has a traditional war shirt pattern with strips of beadwork down each arm, two long strips going down each shoulder extending onto the back and down the entire shirt on the front, and a large triangular bib section starting at the neck extending down. The beadwork shows a chalk white and greasy white base with geometric linear and round patterns in orange, semi-transparent brown. Traces of yellow ocher is in spots. The shirt is in very good condition with no holes, tears or visible repairs with expected wear from use. The shirt displays very well. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Dale Harrison of Cincinnati, Ohio. Measures overall 26”W across the shoulders and 26”L.
