Featured in this lot is this beaded Indian Head Cent fetish from Northern Plains Indian artist Gloria D' circa 1960's. The fetish features a wonderfully and professionally crafted hide, trade seed bead, bras bead, and 19th century Indian Head Cent construction that shows the shape of a turtle and includes trade seed beads with coloration of the following: medium green, greasy yellow, medium blue, and medium red. Gloria D’ credits the creativity of her art to the Native American people, their culture, and religion. For Gloria, born in 1954, art has been a way of life. She is a self-taught artist and historian who has learned her art through the elders of South Dakota where she lived for over 20 years. There is a proud people whose horsemanship, cunning leadership, and colorful regalia captured the imagination of the world. They are the Sioux, Crow, Shoshoni, and Arapaho of the Great Plains of North America. They gave us many heroes—Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Black Elk, and many legends—The Black War Bonnet Society, the Bear Warrior Society, and Elk Dreamer, and the Ghost Dance. The condition of this fetish is is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage and shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this fetish is 9 1/2" x 3 1/2". The collective weight of this fetish is 58.6g.
