For your consideration is this vintage Northern Plains Native American beaded Shaman bag. A Native American medicine bag or medicine bundle is a container for items believed to protect or give spiritual powers to its owner. Varying in size, it could be small enough to wear around the neck, or it could be a large bag with a long strap called a “bandolier.”. In historical times, medicine men and shamans generally carried a large medicine bundle that could hold numerous items such as seeds, herbs, pine cones, grass, animal teeth or claws, horsehair, rocks, tobacco, beads, arrowheads, bones, or anything else of relatively small size that possessed spiritual value to the bundles owner. Warriors also carried bundles that included important items, such as rattles, animal furs, special stones, or anything that meant something to the owner. This shaman bag is beautifully decorated with fringed rawhide, colored beads, bells, deer antler tips, and attached medicine bundles. The front is adorned with nine (9) light blue and white beads in circular shapes and painted or dyed with red and yellow colors. The front also features two bells and a medicine bundle. The sides are lined with rawhide fringe, a medicine bundle on each side wrapped in black cloth, and two deer antler tips painted yellow. The back of the bag is marked with light red hoof print designs either painted or dyed into the rawhide. The bag features a rawhide loop on the bag for hanging the bag, and a longer shoulder strap for carrying. The bag shows excellent character and craftsmanship. Overall the bag is in good condition and shows wear from use and its vintage age. It measures approximately 10" wide and 12" in height.
