Offered in this lot is an Atlas of the Lewis & Clark Expedition SEALED New Old Stock. This book has plates of facsimile maps throughout. The book is bound in blue cloth with gold gilt lettering. This is the atlas volume of Moulton's significant edition of the Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, presenting in facsimile the many manuscript maps that were produced during the journey, and the later finished forms of them. When the Corps of Discovery (Lewis and Clark) left the vicinity of St. Louis in 1804 to explore the American West, they had very limited knowledge of the terrain that they were to cross. Existing maps often contained large blank spaces and wild inaccuracies. Clark painstakingly mapped every mile of the journey, drawing from both direct observation and from the reports of Indians and fur traders. On their return, Lewis and Clark directed the execution of new maps detailing with remarkable accuracy the features of the country that they had traversed. The book measures 19 1/2" x 1 3 1/2". The book is still sealed in plastic and comes in its original shipping box. The book is in New Old Stock/fine condition.
