This is a truly phenomenal Hesquiaht Band of the Nuu-chah-nulth Nation of the Northwest Coast Indians of Vancouver Island, British Columbia signed Charlie Mickey (1910-1988) showing a large, full-size totemic carved cradle, signed on the bottom from ex-Allard with old tag. The bottom is largely carved / signed “CARVED CHARLIE MICKEY” and likely dated to circa 1930-1950’s. The piece shows a Thunderbird, Orca (Killer Whale) and Seal Nuu-Chah-Nulth Hunting Totem carvings. Charlie Mickey (1910-1988) of the Hesquiaht Band of the Nuu-chah-nulth Nation, also referred to as Nootka, from the Vancouver Island in the village of Hesquiat (northwest of Tofino, BC Canada). Charlie married Caroline and together they had 13 children including Mark Mickey, who is an accomplished artist on his own. The piece is comprised of solid red cedar with high-relief totemic carved traditional Nuu-Chah-Nulth Northwest Coast Indian carvings showing a spread wing Eagle headboard, concave kerfed bottom, Seal, Human figures, Eagle, Seahawk, Orca, Thunderbird. The bottoms show a solid red cedar piece that is hand-hewn with a bowl like bottom. This is a large oversized piece showing a cardle board / cradleboard, crib or massive feast bowl like pattern showing nice coloring from honest age and use. Truly a historic piece from a historic artist with honest signature from the ex-Allard sale and original Allard tag. Charlie Mickey carvings are highly collectible with few large examples as this being offered to the public market, see the Totem by Charlie Mickey sold by Cottone Auctions in March 2013 for over $4,000 (w/ bp) with this being a larger more unique example. Measures overall 34.5-inches long by 11.75-inches wide by 14.25-inches high.
