Featured in this lot is this hand carved and signed, Northwest Coast wood Thunderbird / Medicine man bolo tie from the 1950s. In Indigenous North American traditions, a thunderbird is a strong, supernatural entity that resembles a bird and represents strength, protection, and the powers of nature. This mythical creature, which is frequently portrayed in Pacific Northwest and Great Plains cultures, is thought to shoot lightning from its eyes and produce thunder by flapping its wings. This bolo tie features a braided rawhide leather construction with rawhide fringes at the ends of the strands with sterling cones. It features a hand carved wood thunderbird and medicine man bolo pendant showing a thunderbird head and wings with a Medicine man face as the body. It is signed and marked on the back reading, "Thunder Bird w/ Medicine Man". The bolo itself measures 4 1/2" L x 2 7/8" W, while the braided leather strand measures 29" L x 3/8" W. It has a collective weight of 40.6 grams.
