Offered in this lot is this Oaxaca Zapotec Banded Royal Purple Rug, circa 1950s. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted construction that shows colour bands of light grey, rosé red, and blue-ish grey, maroon, sage green and camel grey. Cream coloured fringe on both vertical ends. Traditional Zapotec stepped designs harken to the ancient ruins of Mitla. The Zapotec people, also called the "Cloud People" are an indigenous people who thrived in southern Mexico in the state of Oaxaca for centuries and whose descendants continue to live in the area. They were skilled in architecture, sculpture, ceramics, and metallurgy. The Zapotec culture included a complex cosmology with powereful spirits, symbols, and a sacred calendar with days associated with different types of animals and other natural things taken from nature. The condition of this Oaxaca Zapotec wool rug is in preserved condition with some wear to the construction of the rug. Measures 30.25"W x 54"L, weight is 1lb, 14oz.
