This is an original Bat Masterson court document from Howard Holden vs. WB Masterson Ford County, Kansas Petition of Replevin circa 1880, which orders Masterson to pay $6,000 to Holden; Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. Bartholemew William Barclay "Bat" Masterson (November 26, 1853 – October 25, 1921) was a U.S. Army scout, lawman, professional gambler, and journalist known for his exploits in the late 19th and early 20th-century American Old West. He was born to a working-class Irish family in Quebec, but he moved to the Western frontier as a young man and quickly distinguished himself as a buffalo hunter, civilian scout, and Indian fighter on the Great Plains. He later earned fame as a gunfighter and sheriff in Dodge City, Kansas, during which time he was involved in several notable shootouts. The petition features a wonderfully and professionally crafted hand written construction that shows a Petition of Replevin (A "petition of replevin" is a legal request, or lawsuit, filed to get personal property returned that is wrongfully taken or detained. It's essentially a way to reclaim possession of goods that someone else is holding without the rightful owner's permission.), from the Plaintiff Howard Holden about some goods and supplies that Bat Masterson had confiscated the action orders bat to pay the sum of $6,000.00 for the month of confiscation and inconvenience and was signed in Jan. 1880. The petition comes complete with an original museum tag that reads as follows: H.M. Holden, Bat Masterson 1880. The condition of this Ford County Petition of Replevin is well preserved with some slight browning to the paper consistent with the age but otherwise shows a well preserved condition.
