This is an exceptionally rare original Ralph Russell Doubleday Montana Rodeo photograph collected from the Stockman Association Club Bar from the early to mid 1900’s. Ralph Russell Doubleday was a prominent rodeo photographer from 1910-1952. He was born on July 4, 1881, in Jackson County, Iowa, and after his family moved to Sycamore, Illinois, in 1900, he became interested in photographing local events. In August 1910, he traveled to the Cheyenne Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and photographed his first rodeo. He captured Gus Nylen being thrown from bucking horse “Teddy Roosevelt”, and that image is considered to be the first shot of a man being thrown from a horse at a rodeo. Due to the success of selling prints and postcards of his photographs, Doubleday decided to make a career from rodeo photography. He shot his last event in 1952 and died on June 30, 1958. This original photograph displays a cowboy as he falls from the saddle of a bucking horse in front of a cheering crowd. The background shows an arena with stadium seats behind a fence with a second cowboy on horseback riding up to the first. The photo is set into a wonderful hard wood frame with exterior of the frame showing the natural wood sides. The piece shows good condition overall with minor wear across the photo due to age. The frame measures 44" wide by 34 1/4" tall with the photo measuring 38 1/2" wide by 29 1/2" tall. A very similar example sold in the North American Auction Co. 4/25/2020 sale for $2,583.00 (shown with bp) with this being the last example from the collection.
