Included in this lot is an original Edith Oliver etching of the oldest U.S. schoolhouse. The Oldest Wooden School House is a wooden structure located at 14 St. George Street in St. Augustine, Florida near the city gate. It is touted as being the oldest wooden school building in the United States. The exact date of construction is unknown, but it first appears on tax records in 1716. This original etching depicts this wooden school house and the surrounding shrubbery. Beneath the etching is a signed note by the artist Edith Oliver. Born in Chicago, Edith Oliver visited St. Augustine, Florida where she married Robert Oliver in 1935. Her primary focus was hand-colored etchings, which many confuse for watercolors. Early in her career, she traveled and painted in Europe. She primarily depicted scenes of historic structures and houses around St. Augustine, where she died in 1979. The piece is professional framed and matted. The visible artwork measures 5” x 4” and the frame measures 9” x 8 ¼”.
