Featured in this lot is this original Indian daya (dayam) wood & rawhide drum from the mid 20th century. A Daya (or Dayan) drum is the smaller, treble drum in a pair of Indian tabla hand drums, typically made from hardwood like sheesham, played with the right hand, and tuned to a specific musical note (often the tonic) to provide the melodic foundation, contrasting with the larger, bass-pitched Bayan drum. Both drums feature unique heads with a black spot (syahi) for rich overtones, and the daya's tension is adjusted with rawhide lacing and a tuning hammer. This drum shows a red colored wood construction with rawhide drum heads and lacing. The eight wood tuning hammers are painted on the edges with black paint and can be moved up and down to tune the drum. It shows good condition overall with little wear present and no signs of damage noted. It measures 8 1/2" L x 8 1/2" W x 10 1/2" H and weighs 7 pounds and 6 ounces.
