For auction in this lot is an original Frank La Roche photograph of traveling Sioux Native American Indians, pulling a traditional travois cart. Frank La Roche was born in Philadelphia on June 20, 1853. His parents, Aaron and Anna La Roche, of French and German ancestry, were among the first settlers of that area. He was educated in the schools of Philadelphia and at age 17 took a position in a photographic studio. Between 1872 through 1888, La Roche moved around the country from Philadelphia, to Florida, followed by New York City, Salt Lake City, Des Moines, Iowa - And finally settling in Seattle, Washington in 1889. Frank maintained his successful photography studio and gallery for 25 years, when he retired to Skagit County, and passed the business on to his son Frank La Roche Jr. La Roche was known for multiple styles of photography - Most notably for his scenic landscapes of the Washington States famous Puget Sound, high-class portrait photography, and his documentation's of the Yukon Gold Rush, where he made over 100 round-trips. This photo is signed on the bottom left hand corner, reading "436. Sioux Indian Travois - La Roche. SEATTLE.". Attributing this photo to 1889 onward, after he opened his Seattle studio. Overall, the photograph shows good condition, with only minor creasing, and edge wear. The photograph is housed in a beautiful gilted wooden frame. The photograph itself without the additional size of the frame, measures 23 1/4" wide, and 14" tall.
