Featured in this lot is a antique Mandalian, Lamp Shade style design metal mesh purse with the patented "Lustro-Pearl" finish, circa 1920. Whiting & Davis and Mandalian "Flapper" styled purses were very popular in the 1920s and '30s. Mandalian are especially prized by collectors due to their quality and rarity, and are known for the vibrancy of their colours even after one hundred years have elapsed since their manufacture. Many collectors consider the enamelling on Mandalian bags as superior to other makes. Some collectors state that connecting ‘spiders’ are stronger & thicker than the other brands of this time which means they are more sound & less likely to break.
The colours and design of this purse are stunning, the "fish scale" apperarance is striking. The metal "rope" carrying chain was also a patented design. The mouth metal has a Victorian scroll embossed design with a "kissing" lock closure.
No marring noted, the gold tone is still visible, measures 6.5"L x 4"W approximately.
