For your consideration is this original U.S. Civil War 1860 Model light cavalry saber dated 1864. This sword is a model 1860, also known as M1862 and was manufactured by Mansfield & Lamb. The piece shows a steel blade with a solid brass guard and a leather and brass wrapped wood handle. The blade is marked "US C.E.W. 1864" showing that is was inspected by Charles E. Wilson. For swords produced in 1864, his inspection stamp has only been found on 1860 Cavalry Sabers by Mansfield & Lamb. The scabbard shows simple metal construction with two attachment point rings. The sword was used prominently in the American Civil War and replaced out the larger and heavier m1840 cavalry saber. The M1862 was used to outfit light cavalry units as well as officers such as George Armstrong Custer and J.E.B. Stuart. The sword shows good condition with some patina throughout the blade and scabbard. The scabbard shows dents and patina through its years of use. The sword in the scabbard measures 42" L. The blade measures 35" L.*
