Featured in this lot is this original U.S. Civil War 1862 model cavalry saber circa 1862. The saber features a wonderfully and professionally crafted steel construction that shows a curved blade with a double loop sheath. This sword is a model 1860, also known as M1862 and was manufactured by Mansfield & Lamb. The piece shows a steel blade with a solid brass guard and a leather and brass wrapped wood handle. The blade is marked as follows: U.S. - J.H. - 1862 - Mansfield & AMB Crestdale R.I. The scabbard shows simple metal construction with two attachment point rings. The sword was used prominently in the American Civil War and replaced out the larger and heavier m1840 cavalry saber. The M1862 was used to outfit light cavalry units as well as officers such as George Armstrong Custer and J.E.B. The condition of this Civil War cavalry saber is well preserved with some patina to the blade and slight oxidation to the sheath but otherwise shows a well preserved condition. The measurements of this sword sheathed is 42 1/2" x 5" x 4" and the blade length is 34 7/8". The collective weight of this sword is 3lb 6oz.
