Offered in this lot is a pair of Wasson & Nelson handtooled studded Batwing Leather Chaps, circa 1920-1922. Renown saddle & harness maker Clarence H. Nelson grew up and learned saddle and harness making in Leadville, Colorado. He moved to Grand Junction, CO. & opened his own saddle shop. 1920 he was partners with a Mr. Wasson. In 1922 he went into a partnership with Heny Post that lasted until some time between 1926 and 1929. Nelson continued to make saddles until his death around 1944. His saddles were numbered and dated on the back of the cantle: 1020 would signify the tenth saddle made in 1920. The Basket top and side yokes are handtooled, the design still prominent after 100 years! Wonderfully and professionally crafted leather original construction with four studs on the face of each leg, with a batwing design and shows patina consistent with age. These batwing leather chaps are in remarkable condition considering their age and extensive use. White stitching is missing and or frayed throughout. The lower right leg stud is missing, a four (4) inch tear is on the upper left front leg, smaller tears are noted along edges of both legs, no other signs of damage are noted.
