Featured in this lot is beautifully crafted Shaman Haida drum made by Tsimshian Tribe member Clarence A. Wells circa late 1900s / early 2000s. The drum features a wonderfully and professionally crafted construction that features the "Fish Hawk" totems like a Ying and Yang presentation and is marked at the bottom as follows: "Fish Hawk" - Clarence A. Wells. Clarence A. Wells, Gitxsan (Gitsan), Clan of the Tsimshian. Clarence Wells is a well-known contemporary Pacific Northwest Coast First Nations artist and carver who was born in Port Alberni, British Columbia, in 1950. He spent five years at Alberni Indian Residential School before returning to Prince Rupert in 1962. At the age of 15, he received a National Art Design Award signed by Arthur Laing and relocated to Vancouver in 1965, where he attended the Langara Campus of Vancouver Community College for four years, with an emphasis on art. Clarence A. Wells has now gained international recognition for his Haida-style paintings, which are frequently painted on hand-crafted shaman drums, as well as hand-carved boxes and other household goods. The condition of this drum is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage and shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this drum are 11" x 11" x 2". The collective weight of this drum is 8oz.
