For your consideration is this Pacific Northwest, Kwakiutl "Spirit Wrestler" mask, circa early 1900's. This mask shows a bold figural design and construction, boasting a wonderful addition of horse hair to its crown and polychrome green around the eyes and the nose. The construction is consistent with other “Spirit Wrestler” masks. The mask shows blue clipped jowl cheeks with red painted lips. The mask is constructed of cedar bark and is hand carved. Masks are highly valued by the Kwakiutl, serving as potent manifestations of ancestral spirits and supernatural beings and offering these supernatural entities’ temporary embodiment and communication through dance and other kinds of performance. The condition of this mask is good, with some wear to the paint consistent with age and ceremonial usage; however, the mask shows good, overall condition. The measurements of this mask are 13" x 8 1/2" x 5".
