Presented in this lot is a beautiful Original Paiute Violet Lowery Basketry Beaded Buckskin Cradle Basket, circa late century. This Paiute cradleboard features a buckskin covering, soft animal fur for keeping a baby warm and small cowrie shells attached to buckskin strips. Trade seed bead designs of red, white, corn yellow, root beer brown, powder blue, and transparent orange colours. Dyed trade thread is woven into the prominent canopy. The cradle basket frame is light weight sumac or willow. Violet Lowery Nixon (also known as Violet Lowery) is a Northern Paiute artist based in Nixon, Nevada, located on the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation. She is renowned for her traditional indigenous craftsmanship, particularly hand-woven baby baskets (known as cradlebaskets) and beaded moccasins. This amazing cradleboard is in very nice condition, no marring observed. Measures 10.125"W x 25.5"L x 9.75 H, weight is 1lb.
