This is an exceptional Patrick Ohlinger (Taos, New Mexico, 1954-2021) coin silver concho belt signed and dated 1992. Patrick Ohlinger was born approximately in 1954 / 1955, and he came to Taos, New Mexico in early 1968 at the age of 13. He found himself intrigued with the art and culture of the “Old Pawn” silversmith of the Navajo, Zuni and Hopi Native American Indian tribes. He began his silverwork career completely by 1969 and started to specialize in his favorite pattern, traditional “Old Pawn” style concho belts. Later he married Anita in 1983 and they began working together. This belt is signed “1992 Patrick Ohlinger COIN”. This example shows a traditional third phase buckle with classic deep stamping and repousse with single dark blue Turquoise stone set at the center along with thirteen oval classic Old Pawn deep stamped repousse concho / concha’s. An interesting fact about this belt, making it one of the most unique and rare examples, each conhco has a completely different classic Old Pawn pattern, no one is the same, some showing diamond cutouts, some with clean oval faces, another with a cabochon of Turquoise, another with raised repousse diamond and so-on. Each concho is backed in thick black leather and shows a copper loop with thin thick black leather belt. The buckle measures 2 5/8” x 2 1/8”. Conchos are each about 2 1/8” x 1.75”. Belt overall length is 43”L. Total weight is 245 grams. Other Patrick Ohlinger coin silver concho belts has been listed / sold for $3,800, as his work is highly collectible.*
