This is a heavy tomahawk in Missouri War Axe pattern attributed to the Pawnee Indians of Kansas with beautifully beaded drop. The tomahawk is from the Cecil Bastian, supposedly collected by a Kansas railroad employee in Colby, Kansas and comes from the Jim Bastian collection from Kansas City, Missouri, grandson to Cecil Bastian. The tomahawk has a forged iron head that measures 6-1/2 inches wide by 4-inches wide across the bottom of the blade. There is a large eyelet or eyehole with pewter lead powered end cap at the top. The wood haft handle is adorned with a few rows of later brass covered metal trade tacks and the end shows a serrated “staircase” cut bottom. Tied onto the bottom is a nice beaded Buffalo Bison Indian tanned hide drop. The drop shows a classic geometric beaded pattern with colors of red white heart, corn greasy yellow, light blue, white, cobalt and semi-transparent green. The head has a punch dot decoration and filed lines over the eyelet hole. The bottom of the drop has some red wool and Indian tanned hide twisted frilly fringes. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Cecil Bastian who noted it as being collected by a railroad employee in Colby, Kansas and from the collection of his grandson, Jim Bastian Kansas City, Missouri. Head has some file marks on the edges and a dark shiny coloring. The drop measures overall 22-inches long by 5-inches wide. The club without the drop is 21.5-inches long.
