For your consideration are six Pennsylvania Game Commission hunting signs circa 1960s. By the late 1800s, pollution, deforestation, and unrestricted hunting and trapping were taking their toll on the wildlife. The state Legislature established the Game Commission during this dark era with the goal of conserving and protecting wildlife, which was then widely known as "game." Thanks in large part to the agency's scientifically grounded and progressive wildlife management programs, as well as the support of numerous outdoor organizations and Pennsylvanians, we are able to enjoy the diversity of wildlife that we do. The Commission is mainly financed by the sale of hunting and furtaker licenses; the timber, mineral, and oil/gas revenues from State Game Lands; and the federal excise tax on sporting arms and ammunition. Almost all of the Commission's assets are either owned by hunters and trappers or were purchased with license money. The first in this lot reads, "Watch Your Step" in black letter and shows a man who has just tripped, accidentally shooting his shotgun. The bottom of the sign reads, "Pennsylvania Game Commission" in black lettering. The second in this collection shows a yellow, black and white color scheme and reads, "Handle With Care" in black letter at the top with an image of someone handling a rifle while a sleeve of bullets sit below the gun. The bottom reads, "Pennsylvania Game Commission". The third reads, "Stop Look Listen Before You Shoot" and shows a stuck out arm holding a rifle straight into the air. The piece shows colors of white, black and orange. The bottom reads, "Pennsylvania Game Commission" in black lettering. The fourth in this collection shows a brown, black, white and maroon color scheme and reads, "Be Sure Of Your Target" in black lettering. The piece depicts a deer standing in some trees looking directly towards the viewer. The bottom of the piece reads, "Pennsylvania Game Commission" in maroon lettering. The fifth in this collection shows a forest and lake scene with various animals around the lake such as ducks, birds, baby bears, baby deer, beavers, raccoons, squirrels and more. In the center of the poster it reads, "Leave Them In The Woods" in brown / maroon color. The bottom reads, "Pennsylvania Game Commission". The sixth and final piece in this collection reads, "Good Conduct Can Prevent This / No Hunting Or Trespassing / Be A Gentleman In The Field As Well As At Home". The poster shows a "No Hunting or Trespassing" sign on a post. The bottom reads, "Pennsylvania Game Commission". The signs show good condition overall with some wear from their age and use over the years, but no signs of obvious damage are present. The posters measure from 14" L x 11" W to 17 3/4" L x 11" W.
