Featured in this lot is this original, large format photo of Perry Sanders and another man using a piece of machinery called "The Widow Maker" deep in a mine in 1900s. Perry Tillman "Bud" Sanders was born in 1887 in New Mexico. He was killed in 1915 in a mining accident in the Silver Thread Mine in Tombstone, when he received a fracture at the base of his skull. This photo shows Perry "Bud" Sanders standing to the right of the machine while his co-worker stands to the left. The mining machine stands menacingly in the center between the two men, receiving the nickname "The Widow Maker". It received the name from the countless lives the machine took from kicking up toxic, silica dust, ultimately giving most of the miners who worked with it a fatal lung disease called silicosis. The back is marked reading, "Perry Sanders". The photo shows good condition overall with slight wear present from its age and use over the years, but no signs of major damage is noted. The visible photo measures 8 1/8" L x 6" W, while the entire piece measures 10 3/4" L x 8 7/8" W. It weighs under 6 ounces. Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona SAN01
