Featured in this lot is a Rare First Edition, Two (2) Volume Set of “Personal Memoirs of P.H. Sheridan, General United States”, 1888, published by Charles L. Webster & Company of New York, and the press of Jenkins & McCowan. The books have a vast wealth of information on the Civil War and, more specifically, Sheridan’s insights on the subject. Custer, as well as 25 maps of Civil War campaigns and one of the Indian Campaign of 1868-69. Sheridan writes of his military service in important Civil War battles as well as his role in several Indian raids and battles. He also writes of his role as the commander of the United States army at the end of his career. Complete with 23 illustrations, 9 steel plates, and 14 maps - five of the maps are fold-out maps. Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888) was a career United States Army officer and an aggressive Union general in the American Civil War. He is most famous for his destruction of the Shenandoah Valley in 1864, called “The Burning” by its residents. He was also the subject of an extremely popular poem entitled “Sheridan's Ride”, in which he, and his famous horse, Rienzi save the day by arriving just in time for the Battle of Cedar Creek. The green cloth bound covers are gold gilt embossed on both the spine and front cover. The front covers also have vignettes of General Sheridan on a galloping horse. The books are in good condition for their age with some wear across the covers, foxing noted throughout. The books each measure 9.25"L x 6.25"W x 1.5"D approximately, combined weight 4lb 12oz
