For your consideration is this First Edition, Second State of Personal Recollections of Nelson A. Miles. The book was published in 1896 by the Werner Company of Chicago, making it a First Edition. The front piece is captioned "Major-General" rather than "General", making it a First Edition, Second State. The book has brown cloth boards with gilt titles and decoration; it was illustrated in part by Frederick Remington. Nelson Miles' army career spanned 42 years, starting in the Union Army in 1861. When Miles finally retired in 1903 he had attained the rank of Lieutenant General and held the office of Commanding General of the United States Army. The office of Commanding General of the U.S. Army was abolished when Miles retired, being replaced by the statutory office, Chief of Staff of the United States Army. Miles was instrumental in the Indian Wars of the late 1800's. General Miles died in 1925; he was one of the last surviving general officers who served during the Civil War on either side.
