Featured in this lot is this Philco Transitone Radio model 49-505 from 1949. Founded in 1892 as a battery company, Philco (Philadelphia Storage Battery Company) dominated the radio market from 1928 to the 1950s, becoming the world's leading manufacturer by 1930. Famous for "cathedral" cabinets and affordable, high-quality, and innovative models, they held 30% of US market share by 1934 before being acquired by Ford in 1961. This model, the Transitone 49-505, features five tubes and receives the AM band. It operates on AC or DC current and was originally available in two colors, walnut and ivory. This radio shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. Slight damage noted to the power cord and is not in working condition. It measures 6 1/2" L x 12 1/4" W x 7 3/8" H and weighs 8 pounds and 10 ounces.
