Included in this lot is a First Edition of "Picturesque Washington" by Joseph West Moore, 1887, J. A. & R. A. Reid , publishers, extensively illustrated throughout. Subtitled "A Souvenir of the American Capital," the work acts as an architectural, cultural, and political snapshot of Washington, D.C., during a period of massive post-Civil War growth and urban transformation. The volume is famous for its intricate black-and-white pen and pencil illustrations. They capture the landscape, public halls, and social life of late 19th-century Washington. Moore did not limit his writing to federal buildings. He comprehensively detailed local neighborhoods, commercial sectors, churches, and recreation hubs. It also contains dedicated artistic views of nearby Mount Vernon. The book celebrates the transformation overseen by the Board of Public Works. This initiative turned D.C. from a decaying town into a paved, modern metropolis adorned with tens of thousands of trees, newly built public schools, and monuments. Joseph West Moore (1841-1892) was a 19th-century American author, historian, and journalist best known for documentarian works capturing the infrastructure and political climate of the United States Gilded Age. Moore's narratives vividly illustrated the daily lives, routines, and workloads of regular government clerks and laborers building the federal machine. This original late-Victorian binding features ornate, gilt-stamped decorative brown cloth bound boards. The stamped gold gilt illustration of "Liberty" is set against a red and brown floral design. Intact gold gilt top, bottom and fore edge pages exhibit age tanning and slight foxing. Measures 7.375"W x 10.25"L x 1.25"D, weight is 2lb, 14oz.
