The lot features a unique and desirable gunstock war club tomahawk with knife or spontoon like blade dating to circa 19th Century. The tomahawk shows a unique gunstock hard wood haft with the gripping area showing a hexagonal faceted design with stepped pommel having a hand crudely drilled hole which would have previously held a wrist throng or drop of either feathers or beadwork. The center of the haft, above the gripping area, shows a very unique five cylindrical ringed carved accent with a similar two grooved cylindrical grooved carving at the top. The top of the tomahawk gunstock haft shows a curved or crescent butt stock like design with single primitively drilled hole, which would have previously held a drop of eagle feathers. At the first cylindrical groove to the top of the tomahawk the piece is adorned with thirty-three solid brass square shank trade tacks each having a dark rich patina with green oxidization. One of the tacks over time has been broken off which allows us to see how the original wood shows a dark aged color with the rest of the wood outside from the protected round circle having a darker natural aged patina from age and use. The blade is held onto the haft in place with two peened over square iron nails or pins. The knife or spontoon blade extends from the front to outside the rear, which gives the unique attribute to the user as a second reverse facing pointed weapon. The blade shows completely flat side with the other side showing a sharpened double-edged blade. The surface of the blade is well pitted, with some of the finish or metallic surface still shown when viewed closely. Overall the blade has a thick dark patina. Overall the tomahawk appears to have been stored in a moist area with the tacks and blade having natural oxidation and wear, this is thought to be honest wear and not added. The piece was previously listed and sold by Milestone Auctions in 2017. It has since had a chip at the pommel or base repaired and the spurious drops of feathers and wrist throngs removed. The piece is believed to be an original circa 1800‰Ûªs gunstock tomahawk with fine original patina but could date to the early 20th Century also. The club measures 26 5/8" long, 3/4" thick, and 9 3/4" wide at the blade. Provenance: From a large American Frontier and Indian collection out of Iowa.
