This is an interesting circa 1882 engraved solid brass Halberd Hammer Poll Tomahawk from the Plains Native American Indians. The piece shows a cast brass head with crescent curved blade having filed cast molded steps framing the round eye and a beveled tapering square hammer poll. The entire surface of the head is covered in engraving showing a punch dot, floral, cross hatch, and “U” hoof symbol along with being dated “1882” on the right side of the blade. The tomahawk is secured to a cane haft with old string wrappings having a red dyed which is also shown on the gripping area. It is likely for ceremonial use as the materials used would not have the strength to withstand use as a tool or weapon. Measures overall 21.5”L with a head that is 5”L with a 3”W blade. Provenance: From a historic Eastern Montana American Indian Collection, where the piece was found to be an authentic original, one of the finest collections of American Indian weaponry and antiquities in Montana.
