Offered in this lot is a Plains Indian Leather-Wrapped Carved Wood Bow with leather bow string, early to mid 1900s. The bow and arrow was an indispensable tool for American Indians living on the Great Plains by CE 250 at the latest. When Europeans emigrants founded Jamestown in 1607, the Plains Indian peoples had long ago perfected their bows and arrows into powerful weapons for hunting game and waging war. The bow and arrows both fed and protected the people. Because of their importance, young men learned from the time that they could stand how to handle them, and were also taught how to construct them from their older male relatives. Plains bows are commonly made of ca?suda (ash), ca?pa´ (chokecherry), or wat?e´yaga (juniper) in the north, and osage orange in the south. The leather wrap extends two-thirds up the staff, leather bow string attached. Bow and string are in good overall condition, measures 43"L, 1"W at the middle. Weight is 12oz.
