For your consideration is and exceptional Casas Grandes Ramos polychrome snail effigy vessel dating to circa A.D. 1250-1550. This is truly a wonderful Pre-Historic Casas Grandes Native American Indian example in overall good condition. Ramos polychrome is characterized by a white to light gray paste and surfaces. Paste is white or buff to tan in color. Pastes tend to be hard and sometimes vitreous and appear to have been fired to a high temperature in an oxidizing atmosphere. Surfaces are often poorly polished and not slipped and light (white, yellow, buff or tan) in color. This type appears to exhibit very fine-grained temper if any is observable at all. Vessels tend to be evenly and consistently shaped, often exhibiting an almost sculptural appearance. Vessel forms often consist of steep neck less jars that gradually slope end ward, ollas with globular bodies and straight narrow openings, steep bowls and effigies. This vessel shows sharp crisp black lines with bold red and black motifs in the shape of triangles. Typical of the Ramos style the solid geometric patterns compliment the snail effigy design of the vessel. This piece comes out of a collection and features a museum tag on the bottom of the vessel. This Effigy measures 5.5" x 7.25".
