Featured in this lot is this prehistoric Mississippian steatite bar amulet found in Perry County, Ohio from circa 600-400 BCE. This is a rare and beautifully shaped black and brown steatite bar amulet showing two drill holes, one on the left and one on the right. Bar amulets like this one are known from mound burials in Red Ocher sites throughout the upper American Midwest (Great Lakes Region, from Eastern Iowa to Central Ohio). Inside these burials, amulets lay alongside bifaces, projectile points, and copper beads. Bar amulets were also known to be a protective charm used to bring good luck and to ward off evil, illness and harm. The bar amulet shows good condition overall with no signs of major damage present. It measures 13/16" L x 4 1/8" W x 13/16" H and weighs under 6 ounces.
