Presented in this lot is a Qing Dynasty Blue and White Underglaze Porcelain Double Happiness Ginger Jar and Lid, circa late 19th century / early 20th century. Ginger jars were often given as gifts to the Emperor. The use of the Chinese character for “double happiness” found on the lid, is found on many blue and white ginger jars, suggests that the jars were often given on special occasions, such as weddings. Just like the marriage, they were intended to last for a lifetime. The underglaze blue decoration on white ground was the earliest type of color decoration. Hovering above poppies and chrysanthemums are two dragonflies. In Chinese culture, the dragonfly is generally seen as a symbol of good luck, happiness, and prosperity. The dragonfly is associated with summer and is believed to bring joy and positive energy wherever it flies. A Chinese belief purports that the insect is the embodiment of the soul of the dragon; the latter is a symbol of happiness. This beautiful Ginger Jar displays glaze contraction spots on the base and body. Jar measures 8" diameter x 9.5"H, weight 4lb, 10oz.
