Presented in this lot is a Chinese Solid Wood Hand Carved Dragon and Fenghuang / Phoenix Wall Hanging, Qing Dynasty, circa early 20th century. Two of the most powerful of the four celestial animals are the dragon and phoenix. The dragon and phoenix are the perfect couple in Feng Shui. Dragon is "yang" while Phoenix is "yin", and they complement each other in creating yin-yang balance to harvest successful matrimonial bliss. While the Fenghuang traditionally symbolizes harmony and balance, it also has various other meanings that depend upon what accompanies the bird. For example, During the Huang dynasty, the Fenghuang represented the empress. During the same time, the dragon became the symbol for the emperor. These were most likely the symbols for Emperor Guangxu and the Empress Dowager Cixi. She being the real power of the Qing dynasty from 1861 to its final demise. This celestial couple is the symbol of everlasting love and they being together is the ultimate symbol of marital happiness. It symbolizes that the man and spouse will stay together through thick and thin, and that love and passion will last till the end.
