This is an authentic original Mississippian culture Quapaw painted fish effigy pottery olla dating to 1000-1700 A.D. The piece shows a wide mouth bowl with fish head, top and bottom fin and rear fine being hand worked with distinctive features. Just below the bowls opening are incised circle etches, a truly artful addition. The piece shows a red clay pottery construction with various shades of red mineral paint and has a very old clay / pottery repair down the center and tail. A hairline crack is present which extends 2 to 3 inches near the tail in the body. Provenance: From a large American Indian collection in Billings, Montana collection where the piece was confirmed as being an authentic Quapaw ancient piece. The piece is extremely similar to the Quapaw Fish Effigy Bowl which sold in Tony Putty Artifacts 2014 sale for $3,840. Measures overall 3.5”H by 11”W by 8.5”.
