Featured in this lot is this large painted Chalkware sculpture by artist R. J. Moore, made in 1970. The sculpture depicts a Native American warrior dressed in breechcloth and buckskin pants, right arm outstretched with a buffalo robe in hand, singing. Wearing a hairpipe bone breastplate adorned with turquoise coloured conchos and an eagle feather. This type of 'armour' was used by Plains tribes, especially the Sioux. Although breastplates did not always provide the Native American warriors the necessary protection against bullets or arrows, they were revered for their decorative or medicinal qualities. Aside from a functional use for protection, they were and are still worn in Native American dances and ceremony. The sculpture is signed and dated on the side below the outstretched arm, "AAC RJ Moore 76", "A.M. CAST. CO., INC. 1976" is stamped on the opposite side. This sculpture is in very nice condition, measures 16"H x 7.5" diameter, weight 5lb, 8oz.
