For your consideration are six original photogravures from renowned photographer Rodman Wanamaker (1863-1928) circa 1913. Rodman Wanamaker was an American businessman and heir to the Wanamaker's department store fortune. In addition to operating stores in Philadelphia, New York City, and Paris, he was a patron of the arts, education, golf, athletics, a Native American scholarship, and of early aviation. Rodman Wanamaker hired former Baptist preacher and lecturer Joseph Kossuth Dixon as his official photographer and expedition leader. Rodman Wanamaker, heir to the Philadelphia-based Wanamaker department store dynasty and a political supporter for Native American citizenship rights in the United States, coordinated and sponsored these trips. Wanamaker was particularly anxious that the "vanishing race's" life and culture would be lost to modernity and relegated to reservations. Wanamaker supported trips to document Indian life and culture through photography, film, and sound recordings in order to advance his cause and raise awareness of the condition of the American Indian. The six photogravures are titled and as follows, "Chief Plenty Coups", "Custer Scouts", "The Empty Saddle", "White-Man-Runs-Him", "Goes Ahead - Custer Scout" and "Hairy Moccasin - Custer Scout". The photogravures are marked on the bottom reading, "© by Rodman Wanamaker 1913". They show good condition overall with slight wear present from their age and handling over the years. They appear to have been taken from a book as only one edge shows wear. They measure 9 3/4" L x 6 3/4" W and have a collective weight of under 6 ounces.*
