Featured in this lot is a framed cabinet card, Rain-In-The-Face, by D.F. Barry, circa early 1900s. The photograph features a professionally crafted cabinet card construction that shows the Native American, Rain-In-The-Face, holding a lever action rifle wearing trade cloth clothing. The photograph is marked as follows: Copyright by D.F. Barry - Rain-In-The-Face - Barry. It is said that albumen cabinet cards, such as this one, were popular collectibles and likely sold a few years after his death. The image shows more detail and finer condition than the D.F. Barry example listed in Cowan’s 2010 sale for $900. The Cowan’s example is a cabinet card marked by D.F. Barry, Bismarck, Dakota Territory, Oncapapa Sioux Chief, Brave Bear, with the same image. This example is an early antique wood frame and is hand written on the back, “Albumen photo / “Brave Bear – Sioux” / unsigned F.J. Haynes / page 200, “Following / the Frontier with F.J. Haynes”. The condition of this of this framed cabinet card shows well preserved stature with some wear and patina to the outside frame but otherwise shows no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this framed cabinet card are 11 1/2" x 9 3/4" and the visible cabinet card measures 6 3/8" x 4 1/4".*
