Featured in this lot is this large Raqqa Ware Blue Glaze Footed Bowl, circa 12th-15th century AD. Raqqa ware or Rakka ware is a style of lustreware pottery that was a mainstay of the economy of Raqqa in northeastern Syria during the Ayyubid Dynasty (1171-1260). However, Raqqa was not the only production site and Raqqa Ware has been found at various locations on the Euphrates, such as Qala'at Balis. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame, including ancient Afghan, Indian, Mughal, Persian and Far Asian artifacts. The glazes most often vary in both transparency and shades of turquoise, however other colors were also used. Raqqa Ware ceramics are generally made with a coarse stonepaste that appears reddish-grey before firing. Monochrome or polychrome underglaze with a turquoise overglaze, vegetal and arabesque designs are found on this bowl. Chip noted on mouth rim, chips observed on base foot rim. Measures 9.5" diameter, 4"H, weight 2lb, 2oz.
