Featured in this lot are Rare Late 18th Century French Carved Granite Bollards with Wrought Iron Pine Cone Finials and Chains. Although the term is only two hundred years old, bollards have been around for thousands of years. Some of the oldest surviving examples date from the Roman empire, where carved stone posts were commonly used for tethering in front of buildings, and as milestones along the sides of roads. These nicely weathered concave shaped bollards are stately while imposing in appearance, wrought iron chains are attached to imbedded wrought iron anchors. Rich patina noted throughout, wrought iron exhibits weathered patina. Chipping noted. Each measures 11.5"W x 11.75" base x 34.75"H. They weigh 214 pounds each with a total weight of 428 pounds.
