Featured in this lot is this 1889 1st edition Theodore Roosevelt "The Winning of the West", Vol. I - Vol. VI, inclusive, G. P. Putnam's Sons, publisher. "The Winning of the West" is a significant historical work by Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States. Originally published in four volumes between 1889 and 1896, the series explores the expansion of the American frontier and the role it played in shaping the nation's character and destiny. Roosevelt's work is both a historical narrative and a reflection of his views on American identity, manifest destiny, and the importance of the frontier in the nation's development. Roosevelt (1858-1919) was a prolific author, writing with passion on subjects ranging from foreign policy to the importance of the national park system with a lifelong naturalist avocation. His most ambitious book was the narrative, "The Winning of the West", focused on the American frontier in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Roosevelt said that the American character, indeed a new "American race", had emerged from the heroic wilderness hunters and Indian fighters, acting on the frontier with little government help.
