Bliss publisher, Hartford, CT. The earliest authentic biography of the noted plainsman occupies supreme rank among books of its type. The author tells of his exciting youth in Iowa; removal to Kansas and life there during its most eventful years; overland trips across the plains; Indian encounters; life as a pony express rider; driving a six-in-hand team on the overland stage route; bull whacking; leading a wagon train to the Far West; scouting during the war; hunting and trapping; capture by the Indians; life at Fort Bridger; experiences with Alf Slade, Bob Scott, Wild Bill Hickock and numerous other noted men of the border; Mormon War; Pike’s Peak Gold Rush; fighting the McCandless gang; the Niobrara Expedition; the Sioux Campaign of 1876 and more. 365 pages, steel-engraved frontispiece, numerous wood engravings, some full-page. This original blind-stamped red cloth bound gold gilt cover vignette, spine lettered in gilt. Scuffing and fading exhibited, Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing throughout, measures 5.75"W x 8.5"L x 1.25"D.
