Presented in this lot is a Rare First Edition of "Belden, The White Chief; Or Twelve Years Among The Wild Indians of the Plains", 1871, edited by General James S. Brisbin, C. F. Vent publisher. The book is a 19th century collection of George Belden's journals. Belden spent more than a decade living among the Natives on the Dakota plains of North America including the Sioux, Crow, Cheyenne, and Arapahoe. Belden describes how he learned of their culture, tribes, lifestyles, and customs. This work offers a view into the lives of the various Natives living in Nebraska, Missouri, and among the Rocky Mountains with stories describing human scalping, hunting practices, pipe and smoking rituals, burial, medicine men, religious practices, and much more! George Pfouts Belden (1844-1871) was a hunter, trapper, and guide as well a US Army lieutenant during the American Civil War. The book was published the year of his death. The over 150 year old book is in fair condition, the brown cloth bound gold gilt stamped illustrated hardcover exhibits fading, scuffing and staining on covers and edges, loose spine and boards. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing throughout. Measures 5.5"W x 8"L x 1.5"D, weighs 1lb, 10oz.
