Featured in this lot is this rare 4 5/8" ammonite preserved fossil. The fossil features a wonderfully and professionally interred fossil of an ammonite. Ammonite fossils are the preserved shells of extinct marine cephalopods that lived from the Devonian period to the end of the Cretaceous, disappearing about 66 million years ago. Their spiral, chambered shells, often beautifully patterned, record how these animals regulated buoyancy as they moved through ancient seas. Because ammonites evolved rapidly and had wide geographic ranges, their fossils are valuable index markers that help geologists date rock layers and reconstruct past environments. Today, ammonites are prized both for their scientific importance and their striking aesthetic appeal. The condition of this ammonite fossil is well preserved with some chipping to the rock material it was fossilized in but otherwise shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this fossil is 6" x 6 1/2" x 4 3/4". The collective weight of this fossil is 7lb 10oz.
