This is an extraordinary, rare authentic circa 1860-1870's beaded hide paint pouch or bag from the Cheyenne Native American Indians from the Sundog Bruce VanLandingham collection. The piece exhibits a thick Indian tanned construction that is sinew sewn and has a dark color from age as well as a yellow ocher remnants. The bag shows four hide tab or tails at the opening and traditional geometric beadwork and shape, as that of seen on other pipe and tobacco bags. The piece would have held war mineral pigment paints and is truly a scarce Indian Wars period piece. The bottom has thin Indian hide fringes with dark patina coloring. The piece is accompanied with its original museum collection tag marked, "CHEYENNE PAINT BAG 03.05.34". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery, this piece is directly from the collection. Beaded hide paint bags are rare with few examples brought to the public market. This is truly a wonderful historic piece. Measures overall 8.5" by 2 3/8".
